Ireland (Irish Éire), is a country in northwestern Europe occupying most of the island of Ireland. The Republic of Ireland lies to the west of Great Britain, the largest island in the archipelago. The population of Irish republic is 4,062,235. It is separated from Great Britain to the east by the North Channel and the Irish Sea, and to the southeast by Saint George’s Channel. The western and southern shores of Ireland meet the North Atlantic Ocean. Ireland’s only land border is with Northern Ireland, a province of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, to the northeast. The Irish Republic has an area of 70,273 sq km (27,133 sq mi). The capital and largest city is Dublin. Languages: English, Irish (Gaelic) (both official).
Economy
Predominantly a commercial city, Dublin is also the principal port and trading center of Ireland. Chief industrial establishments include breweries, distilleries, and plants producing electrical and electronic equipment, footwear, glass, pharmaceuticals, and processed foods. Some shipbuilding is carried on, and a number of foundries and automobile assembly plants are located here. Livestock, agricultural products, and local industrial manufactures constitute the principal exports.

The capital and largest city is Dublin, with a population of 1,661,185. Dublin is the commercial and industrial center of Ireland and the country’s principal port. Cork is the second largest city and a major port, with a population of 480,909. Other major cities and towns include Limerick (183,863), Galway (231,035), and Waterford (107,942).
